The Christian mission to unbelievers in the contemporary world is challenged by the dominant way of thinking that excludes a place for God in a transcendent realm. Having questioned transcendence, modern man has adopted the philosophical viewpoint of exclusive humanism enabled by autonomous reason. This shift manifests itself in what scholars have called expressive individualism, the idea that everyone should be encouraged to invent their own essence—to “follow your heart to your own authentic being.” But what is the biblical view and our response?
