About Biblical Counseling

What is Biblical Counseling?

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for
training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good
work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Biblical counseling is a practical and effective approach to counseling that uses the Bible as the
instrument of change in the lives of families and individuals. We believe that the Word of God
speaks sufficiently to the various struggles and sins in each of our lives. We are told in Scripture
that our thoughts, words, and behaviors flow from our sinful hearts (James 4:1-2). The aim of
Biblical counseling is to get to the heart of a person’s motivations and actions by using the Bible
to teach, disciple, reprove, and correct where necessary.

At the core of Biblical counseling is the belief that we are material and immaterial beings . All
aspects of a person must be addressed in counseling, but the Bible teaches us that from the
heart come forth our thoughts and behaviors (Matthew 15:19). Therefore, it is the soul of the
person that is the focus of Biblical counseling and where the transformation and lasting change
takes place.

“And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak,
be patient with them all.” 1 Thess 5:14

The goal of Biblical counseling is spiritual maturity and Christlikeness. This process of change
happens with the use of the Word of God and with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is God’s design
that the local church plays a vital role in this process of change in a person’s life. As the Body of
Christ we are to patiently admonish, encourage, and help one another. With the loving care and
understanding of counselors, pastors, and church community a person’s life can be transformed
into one that brings honor and glory to the Lord.
